Chapter Nineteen

Josh

I was just stepping out of the shower on Sunday night when the flat buzzer sounded. I frowned as I wrapped a towel around my waist, trying to work out who it might be. I hadn’t ordered any food, and it was too late for deliveries. They’d probably gotten the wrong number since the flat numbers here were really weird, and every floor was divided into an A or B, which made it confusing as fuck.

The buzzer sounded again and then a third time like there was a hoard of angry bees stuck to the wall. I picked up the phone, the towel still wrapped around my waist.

“Hello?”

“Hey, it’s me.”

“Aaron?” I stared at the phone like it might try to bite me, wondering why on earth Aaron had shown up at my flat at seven o’clock on a Sunday. As predicted, we’d spent the whole weekend avoiding each other as much as possible and only exchanging the bare minimum of words when we’d been on shift together. I had no idea what he’d suddenly want with me.

“No. It’s Hugh fucking Jackman.”

“What the fuck do you want?”

“Can we talk?” he asked, the sour, snappy note disappearing from his voice. “Please?”

I thought for a second. “Fine. Come up. Third floor, door on your right.” I put the phone back in the cradle, wondering for a moment how Aaron had even known where I lived. I bet Ben had fucking told him. I would definitely be having words with Mr. Carter next time I saw him since sharing of employee details was shady as fuck.

There was a knock on the front door, and I suddenly had the horrifying realisation that I was still wearing nothing but a towel. This was definitely not something I’d ever planned on. In fact, it was starting to feel like the setup for porn. Still, there was nothing I could do except let Aaron in. It was either that or leave him standing on the landing, and that would just look suspicious.

I sighed and padded over to the door, flicking the chain back and turning the key in the lock. I pulled the door open, and Aaron’s mouth dropped open slightly, then a frown appeared between his eyes. “Am I disturbing you?”

“Always,” I said. “But not really. Come in.”

“Thanks.” He stepped through the door, toeing off a pair of old black trainers. It seemed like he was trying not to look at me, but I kept catching his eyes flicking towards me. I couldn’t stop myself from looking at him, though. He was wearing a pair of dark jeans that hugged his thighs and a black t-shirt that did the same to his torso. His dark-red hair was pulled back in a loose bun, and as he walked towards the living room, I could see the edge of a tattoo peeking out from the top of his t-shirt. That one was new. I guessed I hadn’t seen it before because our chef’s jackets had high collars.

I swallowed.
